Archbishop Blase Cupich celebrates Mass for our 120th Anniversary
Closing Prayer of the 120th Anniversary Mass

Archbishop Cupich was clearly in awe of the beauty and splendor of our wonderful Basilica when he came to St. Hyacinth to say Mass on Sunday in celebration of our 120 year anniversary. His Homily expressed that the love our church founders had for Christ was of such an elaborate and abundant nature that they built the Basilica as a reflection of that love. We too, should love Christ in this abundant and elaborate way. The Mass incorporated language, music and prayers of the various cultures represented in our parish, including Polish, English, Spanish and Tagalog/Filipino. Our students were seated prominently in front decked out in their school uniforms and were patient and reverent throughout the long Mass. 4 of our students and alumni were altar servers, 4 current students read the Prayers of the Faithful in the 4 languages, and 4 students were asked to carry up the gifts. Emily Gost, altar server and our current student council president, handed the Archbishop a giant gift box at the end of mass, much to his delight...so much so that he tore into the wrapping with excitement! He found a large framed photo collage of our students, an adult sized red SHBS uniform polo shirt (which elicited a thunderous applause from the congregation), and a box full of hand written letters from our students. Mrs. Huzenis and Father Stanley also presented the Archbishop with their own letters. He assured us he would personally read these letters. Although the Archbishop did not address the closing of our school during the Mass as we had hoped and prayed for, we are sad to say that he did confirm to Mrs. Huzenis, Father Stanley and the media that was present that the decision to close all the affected schools under the Archdiocese restructuring plan would stand. We continue to pray and hope that, as he reads through our letters, his heart will be changed on the issue. Meanwhile, we are grateful for the WONDERFUL and moving Mass and that we were able to participate in such meaningful ways. We will continue to pray for the Archbishop Cupich as he begins his new and extremely important journey.
